About Our School
We work all the year round and are proud of our reputation for safety conscious fun and professionalism. Plymouth Sailing School and Plymouth Powerboating was set up in 1957 and is one of the UK’s longest established sea schools. We try hard to accommodate our customers requirements – from the complete beginner to the Professional Yachtmaster and Instructor Training.
In 2018 Plymouth Sailing School and Plymouth Powerboating merged with SeaRegs Training and moved home to a new purpose built Training Centre in Turnchapel Wharf on the banks of the River Plym and with closer access to the sea.
We are based in Turnchapel Wharf and this is the joining point for all classroom based courses plus sailing and RIB training. Our sailing yachts are kept in local marinas and we either bring the yacht to you or you to the yacht depending on the weather forecast. Our Motorboat (Knights Challenge) operates from Sutton Harbour Marina, in the centre of Plymouth and we usually join direct onboard. With all courses we send comprehensive joining instructions so you know where to go and what to bring.
We have lots of car parking at Turnchapel Wharf, there is an excellent bus service from Plymouth City Centre (No. 2) and a frequent water taxi from the Mayflower Steps pontoon on the Barbican to Mountbatten, which is a 15 minute walk away.
Shore based, RIB and motorboat courses are non residential. There are plenty of options for nearby places to stay, including private B & B in the neighbourhood, Mountbatten Hotel, 4 person cabins in the Mountbatten Centre and several good pubs with rooms. We have a list of local hotels and bed & breakfasts. We will be pleased to help if you have any problems booking something up. If you prefer, we can sometimes provide accommodation at a very reasonable cost on one of our boats (subject to availability).
Practical sailing courses: you will live on board the yacht as part of the course, stopping off in various ports to explore ashore and sleep on the boat. A Channel crossing may involve sailing overnight – you will work watches with your fellow crew.
We have wifi for our customers in our office and classrooms. Plymouth City also has free city wifi which can often be picked up as you travel around. We hope that you can find the information you require on these pages, if you have any further questions, or require advice, please call us.
